Boiler Repairs & Fault Finding

All repair work begins with a professional inspection and diagnosis — identifying the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

At Direct Gas & Heating, every repair starts with a structured fault-finding approach. By carefully assessing how your system is operating, faults can be identified clearly and resolved effectively — helping to avoid unnecessary part replacements and repeat issues.

Accurate Diagnosis Comes First

Not all boiler faults are approached in the same way.

In some cases, repairs are carried out by replacing parts based on symptoms alone. This can lead to unnecessary costs or faults that are never fully resolved.

Our approach is different. Every repair begins with a structured fault-finding process, designed to identify the cause of the issue — not just the visible symptoms.

By carefully testing, assessing, and understanding how the system is operating as a whole, faults can be diagnosed accurately and resolved effectively, and a clear repair plan can be provided.

This approach leads to clearer answers, more effective repairs, and fewer repeat issues.

A Structured Approach to Fault Finding

This is what happens during our inspection:

Structured Diagnosis

Every repair begins with a clear and methodical approach to identifying the underlying issue, with each step based on careful testing and system understanding.

Identify the Root Cause

Faults are traced back to their source, rather than simply addressing visible or surface symptoms.

Understand the Full System

Gas supply, airflow, water circulation, and electrical controls are all considered together — because faults rarely exist in isolation.

Common Boiler Problems & Symptoms

If your boiler isn’t working properly, the signs are often noticeable before it stops completely. Here are some of the most common issues.

Common Boiler Faults
No Heat

If your heating or hot water has stopped completely, this usually indicates a fault that requires prompt attention. This can be caused by pressure issues, ignition faults, or internal component failure.

Cold Radiators

If some or all of your radiators are not heating properly, there may be air trapped in the system, sludge build-up, or circulation issues affecting performance.

Low Pressure

Boiler pressure that frequently drops can indicate a leak, a faulty valve, or an issue within the sealed system. Low pressure will often prevent the boiler from operating correctly.

Leaks

Any visible water around your boiler or pipework should be checked as soon as possible. Leaks can lead to pressure loss and may indicate worn seals or damaged internal components.

Ignition Fault

If your boiler struggles to ignite or keeps cutting out, there may be an issue with the ignition system, gas supply, or safety components such as the thermocouple.

Strange Noises

Banging, whistling, or gurgling sounds are often a sign of air in the system, limescale build-up, or circulation problems within the boiler.

Fault Code on Display

Modern boilers will often display a fault code when something isn’t working correctly. These codes help identify the issue, but professional diagnosis is usually required to resolve it safely.

General Fault / Error

If your boiler has shut down or is showing a warning symbol without a clear cause, it may have entered a safety lockout mode. A proper inspection is needed to identify and resolve the underlying issue.

If you’re experiencing any of the above, the next step is to book an inspection to identify the exact cause.

How Our Repair Process Works

Every issue is first assessed through a structured inspection process, so you know exactly what needs to be done before any work begins.

During this stage, the system is checked, tested and documented, ensuring a clear and accurate diagnosis.

Fault Finding & Inspection Process

Every inspection follows a clear and structured process, giving you a complete understanding of the issue before any work is carried out.

Repair Process Infor Graphic

Repair work is carried out as a separate, scheduled visit following inspection and approval. Where replacement parts are required, these will be identified during diagnosis and clearly quoted before any work is carried out.

Every step is designed to keep the process clear, transparent, and under your control — so you always know what’s been identified, what needs to be done, and the cost involved before any repair work begins.

LPG Boiler Repairs

We also carry out fault finding and inspections on LPG boiler systems, commonly found in holiday parks, mobile homes and caravans.

These systems require specific knowledge and experience, and we apply the same structured inspection and diagnostic approach to identify faults safely and accurately before any work is carried out.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re unsure what’s wrong with your boiler or what to expect, these are some of the most common questions our customers are asking.

If your boiler is not working as expected, the first step is to book a £120 Heating & Plumbing Site Survey. Many faults can produce similar symptoms, so the engineer must inspect and diagnose the problem before deciding what work is required.

If the problem can be resolved safely during the appointment without significant parts or additional labour, the engineer may complete the repair as part of the visit. Otherwise, the findings will be explained and a separate quotation will be provided.

Not all faults can be repaired cost-effectively. Following the Site Survey, we will clearly explain the issue and advise whether repair or replacement is the better option, so you can make an informed decision.

Where an LPG boiler or heating-system repair is required, the first appointment is a £120 Heating & Plumbing Site Survey. The engineer will inspect and diagnose the problem and explain the findings.

If the problem can be resolved safely within the appointment without significant parts or additional labour, the engineer may complete the repair during the visit. Otherwise, a separate quotation will be provided.

Yes. During the Heating & Plumbing Site Survey, the engineer will inspect and diagnose the problem and explain the findings and recommended next steps.

A simple repair may be completed during the appointment where it is safe and reasonable to do so. If replacement parts, further investigation or additional labour are required, these will be included in a separate quotation. No additional chargeable work will be carried out without your agreement.

Not always. Some issues can be resolved through adjustment or minor work, while others require replacement parts. Whether replacement parts are required will be determined during the Site Survey and diagnostic checks.

If the engineer determines during the Heating & Plumbing Site Survey that repairing the boiler would not be practical or cost-effective, the available options will be explained clearly.

The engineer will assess the property and heating system and prepare a separate quotation covering the recommended boiler, materials, installation and removal of the old appliance.

There is no obligation to proceed with the quoted work.

Yes. Intermittent faults can be difficult to identify because the problem may not be present throughout the appointment. A £120 Heating & Plumbing Site Survey allows the engineer to inspect the boiler and heating system, carry out appropriate diagnostic checks and assess the available evidence.

If the fault cannot be confirmed during the visit, the engineer will explain the findings and any further investigation that may be required. Any additional work or replacement parts will be quoted separately.

Yes. A Heating & Plumbing Site Survey can be used to investigate problems involving the boiler, circulation, radiators, valves, controls and the wider heating system.

If the problem can be resolved safely during the appointment without significant parts or additional labour, the engineer may complete the work during the visit. Where further work is required, the findings will be explained and a separate quotation may be provided.

A Heating & Plumbing Site Survey is required when a boiler or heating-system fault needs to be investigated and diagnosed before repair work can be agreed.

A Site Survey may also be required for:

  • Intermittent or repeated faults
  • Problems involving the wider heating system
  • Work requiring replacement parts or further diagnosis
  • Boiler replacement or installation work
  • Major alterations or system upgrades
  • Larger or more complex commercial heating systems

The engineer will inspect the system, explain the findings and, where appropriate, provide a quotation for further work. A separate written report is not included with the Site Survey.
