TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION, DIAGNOSIS & PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

Site Survey

When your heating or plumbing is not working properly, the cause is not always obvious from a photograph or short description.

Our Site Survey is an engineer call-out designed to investigate the problem, identify the likely cause and establish the appropriate solution. If the issue is minor and can be resolved within the appointment, the repair will normally be completed as part of the service.

For work requiring additional time, materials, research or planning, a separate quotation or estimate will be provided.

What Is a Site Survey?

A Site Survey is an engineer visit for work that requires technical investigation before the correct solution and cost can be established.

During the visit, we assess the reported issue, examine the relevant heating, plumbing or gas installation and record the technical information needed to determine the most appropriate way forward. Photographs may be taken where helpful for diagnosis, research or quotation preparation.

If the issue is minor and can be safely resolved within the appointment, the engineer will normally complete the repair as part of the Site Survey service.

For work requiring additional time, materials, specialist components or further investigation, a separate quotation or estimate will be provided.

When Is a Site Survey Needed?

A Site Survey may be required when the cause of a problem—or the nature, extent or cost of the work—cannot be accurately established in advance.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Boiler faults requiring investigation
  • Heating problems with no immediately apparent cause
  • Heating or hot-water systems that are not operating correctly
  • Boiler replacement or relocation
  • Heating-system upgrades
  • New heating installations
  • Gas-supply or gas-pipe enquiries
  • Radiator, pipework or control alterations
  • Commercial boiler servicing where the boiler or heating installation exceeds 150kW
  • Commercial heating systems
  • Bespoke heating or plumbing projects
  • Work involving several connected systems or trades
  • Projects requiring design calculations or technical research

For commercial boilers and heating installations over 150kW, a Site Survey is required before a boiler service can be arranged. This allows the engineer to assess the equipment, system configuration, access and servicing requirements before establishing the appropriate scope of work.

Not every job requires a Site Survey. Routine and fixed-price services can normally be booked directly.

If a proper diagnosis, system review or project plan is required first, the Site Survey provides the appropriate starting point.

What Happens During the Site Survey?

1. We discuss the problem

The engineer begins by establishing what has happened, what the customer has experienced and what outcome is required.

2. The system is investigated

The relevant heating, plumbing or gas installation is examined to identify the likely cause of the problem and determine what may be required.

3. Diagnostic checks are carried out

Appropriate observations, measurements and operational checks are completed. Relevant technical details and photographs may also be recorded.

4. A minor repair may be completed

Many call-outs are caused by relatively small faults. Where the issue can be safely resolved within the appointment using a minor repair or component, the engineer will normally complete the work without an additional labour charge.

5. Further work is explained

If the problem requires additional time, significant materials, specialist components or further research, the engineer will explain the recommended solution. A separate quotation or estimate will then be provided where appropriate.

What May Be Considered During the Survey?

The exact scope will depend on the reason for the visit. Relevant considerations may include:

  • Existing boiler or heating-system condition
  • Reported faults and diagnostic findings
  • Gas supply and visible gas pipework
  • Water pressure and pipework suitability
  • Flue arrangements and ventilation
  • Heating controls
  • Relevant electrical-supply requirements
  • Radiators and heat distribution
  • Hot-water cylinders and associated components
  • Boiler or system suitability
  • Heat-loss calculations where required
  • Likely alterations or additional work
  • Requirements involving other trades
  • Expected project complexity and duration

The Site Survey focuses on the particular problem, proposed work or project. It is not a general assessment of every heating and plumbing component throughout the property.

What Happens Next?

The outcome will depend on what is discovered during the visit.

Minor fault resolved

If the problem is straightforward and can be safely repaired within the appointment, the engineer will normally complete the minor repair as part of the £120 Site Survey service.

Additional work required

If the solution requires more time, significant materials or specialist components, the engineer will explain what is required and provide a separate quotation or estimate before proceeding.

Complex investigation or project

Larger installations, unusual faults or bespoke projects may require technical research, calculations or further planning. The proposed solution and costs will then be supplied after the visit.

The purpose of a Site Survey visit is to establish a technically appropriate way forward before significant work or expenditure is agreed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Site Survey includes the engineer’s visit, investigation of the reported problem and an explanation of the findings.

Where the problem can reasonably and safely be resolved during the appointment, the engineer will normally complete the repair as part of the visit.

Many heating and plumbing problems have relatively straightforward causes. The engineer will investigate the issue and, where possible, resolve it during the appointment.

If the repair requires a more costly replacement component, additional materials or further work, the engineer will explain what is needed and discuss the cost with you before proceeding.

Once the problem has been identified, the engineer will explain the recommended solution. Where further work is required, an estimate or quotation can then be prepared.

Complex faults or larger projects may require additional technical research or planning after the visit.

Where further work is required and falls within the services offered by Direct Gas & Heating, an estimate or quotation may be provided once the problem and scope of work have been established.

A Site Survey does not automatically include the detailed report supplied with a Specialist Heating & Plumbing Assessment.

The information provided will depend on the purpose and complexity of the visit and may include findings, recommendations, photographs and proposed costs.

Yes. Once the problem has been identified and the proposed solution explained, you may be able to approve straightforward additional work during the visit.

Yes. Direct Gas & Heating works with domestic, commercial and specialist heating systems.

Larger or more complex commercial projects may require additional research and planning following the visit.

Please describe the problem or proposed work as clearly as possible. Relevant photographs of the boiler, plant room, controls, pipework or affected area can help the engineer prepare for the appointment.

For commercial boilers or heating installations over 150kW, a Site Survey is required before the service can be arranged. The visit allows the engineer to establish the equipment and system requirements so that the correct servicing scope can be determined and priced.

Start with a Proper Technical Assessment
